Now in the first wind of autumn I can say something extra to my enemy without panic of choking,

Without meanness or disdain, but with empathy, with geniality, so that my enemy

Can feel the visionary enamel of the words, even from this city of two rivers that roar out from the forest

Like two fierce winds leaping in a ruckus of prophecy, palpitant, flexing their liquid muscular airs.

You slop-work of a man, you slug, you’re so lax. You’re a crock, a lemon. Even your wife laughs

Behind your back, laughing at your self-love and all the crap about the legendary you—

You’re the husk and not the corn, the commentary and not the text, the shell, the old skin, the meaning without the experience.

And this will be the story I tell to my children in bed, a kill-shot clean as crystals,
